Graphic Design Internship

We serve more than 20,000 visitors per year through hands-on programming and STEM-themed exhibits. As we grow, we are updating our exhibit gallery and other media. Assistant Science Educator

Join the Education team at Discovery Space! Assistant Science Educators will be directly responsible for assisting in the delivery of quality science programs and hands-on science activities. They will also be responsible for helping to manage program participants and safety. Successful candidates will have had experience managing groups of more than 10 children and demonstrate strong communication and customer service skills.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Prep and cleanup of spaces
  • Program materials management
  • Monitoring the safety of children
  • Engaging children in science in developmentally appropriate ways
  • Other duties as assigned

This is a fast-paced position and will require a considerable amount of time working on your feet. Current CPR and First Aid Certification preferred. Background checks will be required.

Social Media & Photography Intern

MaD Lab Intern

Interested in the maker movement? Do you enjoy working with children? Join the Education team as a MaD Lab Intern (Make and Design Lab) – a makerspace located in our exhibit gallery. People in this position will help to facilitate various maker projects with our visitors! Gain experience planning and leading maker projects, in this fun fast-paced role.

Possible projects include:

  • Helping kids with simple electronics and robotics
  • Encouraging kids to design and build creative solutions to challenges using recycled materials
  • Assisting with and talking about 3D printing to audiences
  • Making scribble bots and using Little Bits

This position will require a considerable amount of time working on your feet and background checks will be required for applicants 18 years and older. Successful candidates will have had experience working with children and will demonstrate initiative and strong problem-solving skills.

  • High school and undergraduate aged applicants are encouraged to apply.
  • There are four positions available.
  • Training provided by Discovery Space on all projects.
  • Minimum commitment of 8 hours/week for 12 weeks. Weekday and Weekend shifts available.

STEM Classroom Assistant

Monday through Friday
August 1-24 from 7am-1pm

STEM Classroom Assistants will be directly responsible for assisting in the delivery of quality educational science programs and hands-on science activities. They will also be responsible for helping to manage program participants and safety. Successful candidates will have had experience managing groups of more than 15 children and demonstrate strong communication and customer service skills.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Prep and cleanup of spaces
  • Program materials management
  • Monitoring the safety of children
  • Overseeing snack/lunch time and outside play time
  • Other duties as assigned

This is a fast-paced position and will require a considerable amount of time working on your feet. Current CPR and First Aid Certification preferred. Background checks will be required.

Immediate opening (must be available): August 1-24 from 7am to 1pm, Monday through Friday

After August 24th, if employee is in good standing with organization, there may be opportunities for assisting with weekend events, birthday parties, afterschool programs or other activities.

Birthday Party Host

Discovery Space is looking for enthusiastic individuals to host our growing number of weekend STEM-themed birthday parties for children. Birthday hosts are responsible for catering to the needs of the birthday family and ensuring a fun and successful event. This includes but is not limited to setting up the room, assisting with clean up, and leading a fun STEM activity during the party. This is a part-time position and will require weekend availability (Friday evenings/Saturdays/Sundays), including Penn State football game Saturdays. Occasionally, hosts will have the opportunity to work during other events held at the science center. Positions are available immediately. All necessary training is provided by Discovery Space. The ideal candidate will have a positive attitude, especially around groups of excited children, will have the ability to prioritize tasks and maneuver on-the-spot changes to the party schedule in a professional manner and will be comfortable leading an activity with children of various ages.

Hourly wage ranges from $8-$10/hour

Birthday parties last 2 hours but commitment per party is 3-4 hours, which includes set up, activity prep and clean up.
