Birthday Party Host

Discovery Space is looking for enthusiastic individuals to host our growing number of weekend STEM-themed birthday parties for children. Birthday hosts are responsible for catering to the needs of the birthday family and ensuring a fun and successful event. This includes but is not limited to setting up the room, assisting with clean up, and leading a fun STEM activity during the party. This is a part-time position and will require weekend availability (Friday evenings/Saturdays/Sundays), including Penn State football game Saturdays. Occasionally, hosts will have the opportunity to work during other events held at the science center. For more about our birthday parties, please see our Birthday Parties page.

Positions are available immediately. All necessary training is provided by Discovery Space. The ideal candidate will have a positive attitude, especially around groups of excited children, will have the ability to prioritize tasks and maneuver on-the-spot changes to the party schedule in a professional manner and will be comfortable leading an activity with children of various ages.

Hourly wage ranges from $8-$10/hour

Birthday parties last 2 hours but commitment per party is 3-4 hours, which includes set up, activity prep and clean up.

Summer Camp Manager

May-August

Join the Education team at Discovery Space this summer as the Summer Camp Manager. The Summer Camp Manager will be responsible for managing camp logistics related to room use, lesson materials and parent communication. Successful candidates will have experience with customer service, strong organizational skills and an interest in STEM education.

30-35 hours/week

Responsibilities Include:

  • Keeping an inventory of summer camp materials
  • Prep and cleanup of program materials
  • Managing the use of camp space
  • Communicating with parents
  • Responsible for some supervision and communication to camp staff
  • Administering first aid
  • Supervising campers
  • Other duties as assigned

This is a fast-paced position and will require a considerable amount of time working on your feet. Current CPR and First Aid Certification preferred. Background checks will be required.

Summer Camp Lead Science Educator

June-August

Join the Education team at Discovery Space this summer as a Summer Camp Lead Science Educator. Educators will be directly responsible for delivering high quality educational STEM lessons and hands-on science activities. Successful candidates will have had experience managing groups of more than 15 children and a strong background in STEM content.

35 hours/week

Responsibilities Include:

  • Implementing Discovery Space camp curriculum and engaging campers
  • Working with colleagues to maintain a safe and fun camp environment
  • Prep and clean-up of program materials
  • Managing transitions between lessons
  • Constant communication with Education Manager (including checking email daily)
  • Monitoring the health and safety of all campers
  • Other duties as assigned

This is a fast-paced position and will require a considerable amount of time working on your feet. Current CPR and First Aid Certification preferred. Background checks will be required.

Summer Camp Classroom Leader

Join the Education team at Discovery Space this summer as a Summer Camp Classroom Leader. Camp Leader’s will be directly responsible for supporting the facilitation of high quality STEM experiments and hands-on science activities while managing all campers and their safety. Successful candidates will have had experience managing groups of more than 15 children and will demonstrate strong communication and customer service skills. Previous experience working in a leadership role preferred.

35 hours/week

Responsibilities Include:

  • Assisting with the implementation of Discovery Space camp curriculum and engaging campers
  • Overseeing volunteers assigned to help with camp
  • Prep and clean-up of all spaces used by campers
  • Constant communication with Education Manager (including checking email daily)
  • Monitoring the health and safety of all campers
  • Overseeing snack/lunch time and outside play time
  • Other duties as assigned

Summer Camp Classroom Assistant

Join the Education team at Discovery Space this summer as a Summer Camp Classroom Assistant. Classroom Assistants will be directly responsible for assisting with daily experiments and activities while helping to maintain a safe and fun camp environment. Classroom Assistants will also be expected to help open or close the science center during before care (7:30-9am) and after care (4-5:30pm). Successful candidates will have had experience managing groups of more than 15 children and will demonstrate strong communication and customer service skills.

30 hours/week

Responsibilities Include:

  • Before and/or After care
  • Prep and cleanup of all spaces used by campers
  • Program materials management
  • Monitoring the health and safety of all campers
  • Overseeing snack/lunch time and outside play time
  • Constant communication with supervisor (including checking email daily)
  • Other duties as assigned

Summer Outreach STEM Educator

June-August

Join our education team this summer as an Outreach STEM Educator. Play a vital role in providing engaging STEM experiences for our community, by facilitating hands-on lessons and activities. The Outreach STEM Educator will be directly responsible for facilitating educational programs offsite for the State College Area School district and other community partners. Successful candidates will have had experience managing groups of more than 20 children and will demonstrate strong communication and organization skills.

10-12hrs/week

Summer Camp Education Internship

May-August

Join the Education team this summer as an intern. Gain experience facilitating educational programs, planning camp curriculum, managing program materials, parent communication and more! This is a fast-paced position and will require a considerable amount of time working on your feet. Current CPR and First Aid Certification preferred. Background checks will be required. Successful candidates will have had some experience working with children in groups and will demonstrate strong organization and communication skills.

Minimum commitment of 16 hours/week for 12 weeks.

Summer MaD Lab Internship at Discovery Space

June-August

Interested in the maker movement? Do you enjoy working with children? Join the Education team this summer as a MaD Lab Intern and work in Discovery Space’s makerspace helping to facilitate various maker projects with our visitors! Gain experience planning and leading maker projects, in this fun fast-paced role. This position will require a considerable amount of time working on your feet and background checks will be required. Successful candidates will have had experience working with children and will demonstrate initiative and strong problem-solving skills. High school and undergraduate aged applicants encouraged to apply.

There are 2 positions available. 1 position will be funded thanks to a grant from AAUW. Minimum commitment of 8 hours/week for 8 weeks.

Social Media and Photography Internship

June-August

Join our team this summer and gain practical experience documenting our 2019 Summer Camps. Successful candidates will have previous experience with photography and social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. This fun fast-paced role will require creativity and proficient writing skills.

Minimum commitment of 8 hours/week for 8 weeks.

Front Desk Receptionist

Discovery Space is looking to hire a friendly and enthusiastic front desk receptionist. Front desk receptionists are responsible for ensuring all of our visitors, young and old, have a fun and positive experience. Duties include, but are not limited to overseeing the operation of exhibits, the safety children and families, welcoming visitors, answering questions over the phone and processing various forms of payments and memberships. Front desk receptionists work in a fast-paced environment and must be able to prioritize and multi-task. Background checks required.

This position is part-time (10-15 hours per week) and will require weekend availability as well as Friday and Saturday nights. Interested applicants should complete our online employment application.
