Naked Egg

Did you know that you can dissolve an eggshell to make a “naked” or “rubber” egg? It requires 10-15 minutes of setup, then you can watch the eggshell dissolve in front of your eyes over the course of a week!

The materials you’ll need are vinegar (we used white distilled vinegar), a container with a lid, and an egg or eggshells. Consider using different types of vinegar to explore which type dissolves the eggshell the quickest!

Place your egg in a container and cover it with vinegar. Do you notice the bubbles on the eggshell? The acid in the vinegar reacts with the calcium carbonate in the shell to create carbon dioxide! That acid is what breaks down the shell.

The next day, replace the old vinegar with new vinegar and wait 7 days. After you take your egg out and rinse it off, what do you notice? What does it feel like? What color is it? Is it squishy? Can you shine a light through it? Does it bounce? Record your results on this data sheet and share them with us!
